Our Icon wears a hat with many feathers. He is the founder of International Market Management (IMM) who builds consumer brands in international markets. He runs all the Wendy’s and Jamie Oliver restaurant chains in India. He studied English Literature at the University of Oxford and has worked around the world. He is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal, Business India, Economic Times and other publications and has given Ted Talk. He enjoys cooking and gardening, and above all, he has a heart of gold.
As I was getting ready to start our interview with Jasper Reid, our Icon, 2 minutes before our zoom call, I received a message, ‘We’ve got power cut!’
Jasper gave us a practical demonstration on adaptability by sitting in 45 degrees centigrade on his terrace in his New Delhi home to adapt with the need of the hour rather than calling it off.
Apart from many other accomplishments and philanthropic activities of Jasper, recently he led a movement of ‘One Family’, by collaborating with his family and staff to join hands and reach out to the most affected and distraught section of the society. They fed over 30,000 daily wage earners and migrant workers and organising them to be driven back to their village homes during the lockdown period. This act of compassion for the fellow human is truly humbling and inspirational and can only come when one can feel beyond one’s fears and ego.
Insights:
-
Life is a risk. Life is precious, and Life is to be lived alive, actively with awareness.
-
To adapt, we need to be brave, as inflexibility stems from fear.
-
Be an explorer and have joy in discovering, experiencing and creating new.
-
There is no yesterday and tomorrow. Reality is in the moment.
-
If we all decide how our life is going to be at every stage, then we all become the same. Where are the diversity and aliveness?
-
Love is the most important aspect of living. Wish there was more love for each other and through this crisis, it was evident to see how important it is to feel love for fellow humans.
-
It is sadly an egocentric life we human live. If we can think beyond ourselves and be interested in others there would be more compassion and courage flowing in this world.
Through my brief interaction with Jasper, he reaffirmed through his philosophy of life, that life is meant to flow. You choose your actions based on what feels authentic to you irrespective of how others act or react. You are then truly living your life on your terms.
‘The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.’
-Mother Teresa
